Library Feature

The library at the Salem Avery Museum is named in honor of "Miss Ethel" Andrews (1888-1997). Miss Ethel was born and lived in Shady Side for 108 years and is best remembered as a Shady Side school teacher, principal, post-mistress, Andrews Hotel owner and operator as well as a reporter for the Capital-Gazette. The library has many articles, letters, artifacts, photographs and oral histories about Miss Ethel that capture Shady Side during her lifespan, which she also describes in detail in her biography, "Miss Ethel Remembers."

Among these treasures is the following 10 minute video done when Miss Ethel was 100 years old and in it she recounts her philosophy of life. Her words from 1988 are telling in their application for all of us today. We invite you to hear them yourself and enjoy a reflection on a treasured person in Shady Side history.

Click the play button to start and be sure your volume control is set.

To download it to your computer, ipod or iphone, here is a downloadable file in mp4 format (58Mb).

You will hear Miss Ethel say.
"How to get along with every generation."
"Find out the potential possible for every child."
"Six guidelines for living a good life"
How to be a, "truly happy person"

Heritage Eco Tour

New rain gardens, native plants, heritage vegetable gardens and rain barrels have been added to the Captain Salem Avery Museum grounds to create the Heritage Eco Tour. Visitors will be able to see how the Shady Side Rural Heritage Society is working to be a good steward of the rivers and Chesapeake Bay by following the Heritage Eco Tour around the Museum grounds. The tour will also educate the visitor on how to add rain gardens and rain barrels to their own property.
